Things Get Painted - Iron Maiden

Image
I got this painted up last night in about an hour. It's a fun bit of terrain for any dungeon crawl I run in the future, and a pretty straight forward model to paint up as well. A few people had asked how I painted it up, so I figured I'd run through it quickly on here. All paints mentioned are reaper paints. The entire model was painted Muddy Soil. I thin base coated the metal with a mix of Antique Gold and Leaf Green. I drybrushed with Antique Gold, the Antique Gold and Honed Steel. I added a bit more Honed Steel to pick out edges and the top of bolts. I lined any deep marking with Muddy Soil. I washed with Muddy Soil as well to add a bit of depth back to the larger panels. The verdigris was a mix of Leaf Green and Dragon Blue, brushed into the gaps where water would gather, and brushed some large steaks running down the panels. I then added more Pale Green, then Pure White for subsequent streaks. I also painted the eyes on these colours, then a wash of Leaf Green and Muddy

Things Get Played - "I just keep attacking the statue"

So, as a warning, this post is mainly text... I've posted a few times about my dnd game. I'm still having fun, and have another two games lined up, plus big plans for the future for it. But I wanted to post briefly on the fact I rapidly lose control of my story in game, and I really like it! My players have been (with good intention) taking control of the games for a while now. I plan the plot less and less, and they fill in the blanks with no issue. They usually come up with some idea I didn't have, and watching it unfold is great. Two games ago, I had them fighting under a lake against some mercenaries who were feeding arcane energy to a giant dragon corpse frozen in ice, which from here will be referred to as "the statue". They had already run the game off the rails early on with a great outcome, and there were some cool character moments as well. Now the fighting had begun, I lowered my guard. The final fight was the outcome of the arcane offering was a sh

Things Get Painted - Infinity Haqqislam

Image
The gang's all here! And it only took a year... Oh well, I finally got my old Haqqislam models painted up. With a colour scheme stolen from some form of electric rodent, these I've been knocking round my brain for a while, and my painting desk for the last year or so. It's been good to get them finished up, and I got to try a few things along the way. These were another chance to try out the NMM paint set Vallejo did, which comes with a guide written by Angel Giraldez. I was also curious about the sketch style which has been shown on Contrast Miniatures, so gave it a go on these. I need to work on that a bit more, but while I was aiming for tabletop standard, I'm happy with how these turned out. The Fiday was my favourite to paint. I liked the pose and the chance to do a few lens and visor parts, and the knife was going to be a fun one to mess with for NMM. I'm slowly getting there with NMM, and know what I need to do next time to get a bit better, which is alway

A quick picture of a tree spirit I did a speed paint on. Fun to get another mini done.

Things Get Painted - The Cliff Dragon

Image
You've already seen this guy, but I figured I'd do another post to show the base, and the finished model. I did a really basic base with odd tufts of grass, and then... Resin time! Yep, I'm trying water effects again. This time I messed around with some colouring options (I'll go into that at a later date), and made enough mistakes to learn what to do on a future comp entry. I put some extra 50my round bases under the normal base. They were glued in, but just served to raise the main base from the table. That way, when I put the tape edging on it, there was more structure for the tape to help form an edge for the pour. After leaving it for two days to set, I removed the tape. The base had a strange white buildup, but I'm not sure if that was tape residue or something else. Either way, it was able to be sanded back with the resin, the edge of which was then given a gloss coat. Finally, I used some Vallejo water effect gel on the top of the water. I may revisit this

Thing Get Painted - Wereape and Cliff Dragon

Image
Another round of quick updates. Here are some wip shots of the Wereape from Bones 3. I wanted a quick base, and one that was green and saturated to contrast the ape itself. A few tufts help break it up from just being static grass. It's not perfect, but it's done and table ready, so I'm happy. It was really fun to paint as well, so I'd definitely consider painting more in the future. This is a Grenadier Cliff Dragon I got for $2 at a bring and buy years ago. For the last few months it has been sitting half done on my desk. I figured that it's better finished to a tabletop quality than sitting there hoping I get a chance to paint it. My main inspiration was the old yellow and green orc wyvern from 90s Warhammer. I ended up going with a pale green for the chest though to make it a bit different. I also made some tall tufts of grass for the base before the final stage. The bingo challenge I mentioned a while ago mentions a base more elaborate than you'd usually us

Things Get Painted - Winter Wolf

Image
So, after prepping for cons, going to cons, prepping and going to the states, then catching up on things when I got back home, I finally got to finish something last night: This is a Winter Wolf from Bones 3. You can probably see that it was a quick job, roughly drybrushed and based, and I didn't even clean the mold lines off it. But it was fun, and also made me want to paint my yetis. I painted the exposed to of the base RMS Surf Aqua, then after adding some grass tufts, coated the base and some of the rock in a mix of Secret Weapon Realistic Water and old GW Snow powder. The aim was to get a melting snow look. Not perfect, but serviceable on the table top. I want to experiment more with snow effects, but at the moment I feel the GW snow powder is not the way to go. I am look into other alternatives. Next up, finishing this guy! I started both the wolf and ape while I was away for Gammacon before I went away, so I'm looking forward to finishing this one up as well, even if it

Just some quick photos I took of a Reaper Bones Sea Lion I painted for the OzPainters Underwater challenge.

Things Get Built and Things Get Painted - There will be green!

I'm still building a lot of stuff, but also painting stuff as well. I seem to have hit a point where I can slow down building and paint more, which will be good to ease back into. I've been planning out my Waldgeists for Malifaux. I wanted the bayou bases to match my Lilith crew, but for models with such a wide stance and large areas covering the base, it was tricky to fit them on 'as is'. Because of this, I had to make some additions with green stuff for them to balance out a bit. I've also had to pin various parts. If I assembled the base, painting the water under the dock would be tricky. And the base would be obscured with the model on top. Because of this, the plan is to have two or three assemblies to paint: the bases, the docks, and the minis themselves. I can then pin them all together. I picked this up from Iron Wind Metals a few years ago at Gencon. I figured it would be worth doing up on a 50mm base to use for DnD terrain, and also a summoning portal in
